Tee Keat dropped due to Soi Lek's objections, says source

Despite Selangor BN having opined that incumbent Ong Tee Keat is the best candidate for the Pandan parliamentary seat, he has been dropped allegedly due to the objections of MCA president Chua Soi Lek.

According to a senior state BN source, Pandan was not on the list of 16 Selangor parliamentary seats which BN was confident of grabbing, following the dropping of Ong.

“Frankly speaking, we were fighting very hard to make sure that Ong is our candidate. But unfortunately, Chua did not want (Ong).”

The source said that the state BN has been reluctant to accept the decision of the BN central leadership.

As Chinese daily Nanyang Siangpau had reported, Chua had said that Ong was dropped because of his anti-MCA stance instead of fulfilling the standard of “winnable candidate”.

“He (Ong) said that MCA is outdated and he is not representing the party. If you don’t represent MCA, you should not contest under the MCA banner.

“You have to be confident about the party if you want to to contest representing MCA,” Chua was quoted as saying.

Ong was the only Selangor MCA parliamentarian who survived during the 2008 general election.

It is widely speculated that Ong will be defending two-term Pandan on an independent ticket, following an entry on Ong’s personal Facebook page which asked: “Pandan voters, would you support Ong as an independent candidate?”

The post attracted 711 “likes” and 262 comments as at 5.22pm.

However, most netizens do not support Ong as an independent and vowed to vote for Pakatan Rakyat instead.
