The people want to retain me - Ku Nan confident of beating PAS' Husam, points to survey
VIDEOS INSERTED Brushing off speculation that he would be amongst the "old guard" that would be dropped from contesting in the May 5 general election, Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor expressed confidence of being able to stave off a challenge from PAS stalwart Husam Musa in the Putrajaya parliamentary seat.
The 63-year-old Ku Nan, as he is also known, pointed to an internal "study" performed by his party that supported his being retained to defend the seat, which the Kelantan-based Husam has admitted might be a tough fight.
"Well, I think I have been there for the last 2 terms. I have been serving the public there. The public knows me, they know me in and out and they know what I have done, how I have done and how I have been performing there," he told Malaysia Chronicle at the sidelines of a BN meeting in the Putra World Trade Centre.
"I would like to thank the Prime Minister for giving me the chance to stand there and I believe they have also done a study there and whether I have been serving the people. And the people would like to retain me as their representative."
'Newcomers' but not really fresh faces
According to Ku Nan, "new faces" were the key to the Umno-BN's strategy to win the coming general election, which many pundits have opined the Opposition had an even chance of winning.
"Only myself who is in my third term, the rest are 12 new faces as promised by our Prime Minister as we would like to see some transformation. The 12 new faces are capable and able to serve the people and we always put people first. I am quite confident Federal Territories will have a better chance than what we did in 2008," he said.
Nonetheless, in the list read out by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin this morning, the 60-year-old Raja Nong Chik was also among the Umno candidates named to contest in the Federal Territories' 13 seats.
Nong Chik is due to contest in Lembah Pantai, facing PKR's Nurul Izzah. The other 'newcomers' are Titiwangsa Umno Division acting head Johari Ghani who will be fielded in Titiwangsa; Wangsa Maju Umno division head Shafie Abdullah who will contest in Wangsa Maju against PKR's Tan Kee Kwong; Ahmad Fauzi Zahari in Setiawangsa against PKR's Ibrahim Yaacob; and Rozman Isli in Labuan against PKR's Ibrahim Menudin.
Lim Si Pin, the son of Gerakan's late strongman Lim Keng Yaik, will make way for the party's youth-secretary-general, Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, to contest in Batu against PKR's Tian Chua; while Wanita Gerakan secretary-general B Jayanthi Devi will be fielded in Segambut and is most likely to face DAP's Lim Lip Eng.
MCA's Frankie Gan Joon Zin was named to take on Bukit Bintang currently held by DAP's Fong Kui Lin; Tan Kok Eng to contest in Bandar Tun Razak against PKR's Khalid Ibrahim; Teoh Chee Hooi in Cheras against DAP's Tan Kok Wai and Nicole Wong Siaw Ting in Seputeh now held by DAP's Teresa Kok.
In the 2008 election, the Opposition swept 10 seats out of 13 and is expected to win at least 12 seats in the next round. DAP won 5, PKR won 4, PAS 1 while Umno-BN took 3 - namely Putrajaya, Setiawangsa and Labuan.
Factional infighting
Ku Nan also dismissed news reports that alleged his brother was being given Seri Setia state seat to contest due their close connections to Najib,
Some 30 BN supporters had protested at the Umno headquarters holding placards saying, among others, "Remember! Seri Setia will be lost if the candidate is not our choice" and "We do not want a parachute candidate".
"That's got nothing to do with me. It's not fair. He is in Selangor, I am in FT," said Ku Nan.
The protesters had alleged they received information that Tengku Riduan Tengku Mansor would be appointed as candidate for Seri Setia. "We know how he got the position, he is using 'cables'... you know what I mean," said one protester from the PPP.
That did not stop Ku Nan from accusing the Opposition of being in disarray, torn by factional infighting.
"I heard there may be more than one contestants ... I hear the Opposition is splitting into factions," he said.
"I never realized that I am the only old guard left in the FT and I am quite happy with the list that has been read out by our Deputy Prime Minister. It shows that we mean what we said that we want to transform and we would like to move forward. I believe we have the chance to win and people wud like to try them. They are all energetic, they are professional and they are all qualified and I believe that is what we need for Putrajaya (retaining the federal government)."
