If the Barisan Nasional wants to “rebrand” itself like a box of detergent, it would be far better to be honest and adopt the name and logo above. It accurately reflects what the party has become in the 40 years. When Tun Abdul Razak formed the Barisan Nasional (National Front) in 1974, it was to bring together all the political parties of the day, including the opposition Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, which had won power in Penang, and the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, which held power in Kelantan. Supposedly it was to reduce political tension after the 1969 riots. In reality, of course, it was to keep Umno’s hands on power throughout the country. For Penang, the price he paid was the University of Penang (later renamed Universiti Sains Malaysia) and the Penang bridge.
The price that all Malaysians paid? A ruined future for their children.
Barisan Nasional – Barisan Nazional. All shit smells the same.
