DAP claims double voting in army camp

PERAK Canning state seat candidate Wong Kah Woh revealed that a double voting incident had occurred during the advance voting yesterday by army personnel in his constituency.

The Perak DAP Socialist Youth chief said that the Election Commission (EC) allegedly allowed an army personnel to cast his vote twice in the Syed Putra Royal Ranger Regiment Second Battalion polling station.

NONESpeaking at a press conference yesterday, Wong (right) said that an army personnel voter went to cast his vote in the polling station around 3.30pm yesterday, according to the Pakatan Rakyat polling agent on site.

Wong claimed that when the returning officer called the voter's name, both polling agents from BN and Pakatan found that his name had already been crossed out as he had apparently cast his vote earlier in the morning.

"When we wanted to register our protests, the officer said that his name was unmarked and since there was no indelible ink seen on his finger, he was allowed to vote," Wong added.

However, Wong insisted that this was a clear case of double voting, as according to the electoral roll from the polling agents from both BN and Pakatan, the army personnel voter's name had been marked as already voted.

He noted that they were unable to further confirm on whether the voter had previously cast his ballot as the complaint was raised after the election clerk had already applied the ink to his finger.

Wong said the DAP had already submitted a letter of complaint to the returning officer and he urged the EC to deal with the matter urgently.

'Phantom voter' found

Wong also said that there was an alleged phantom voter in the polling station as an army personnel had not been allowed to vote yesterday.

According to the polling agent, he said that the army personnel reached the polling station around 6.15pm, but both sides and the EC had found out that his name was already been crossed out in the roll.

NONENevertheless, Wong noted that the indelible ink had not been applied to the voter.

"This showed that there is a high possibility that somebody had used his identity to vote," he added.
Canning falls under the Ipoh Timor parliamentary seat. It has 2,773 army personnel voters and 371 police personnel voters out of the total 35,181 voters.

Wong is defending his seat against Ceylyn Tay Wei Lung (right) from BN.
