More than 50 student activists held a 'black protest' in front of the Election Commission (EC) headquarters here today over allegations of electoral fraud in the recent 13th General Election (GE13).
Wearing black outfits, the group comprising a few students groups – Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) and Undergraduates Movement for GE-13 (GM13) – among others, were also joined by Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) chairman Badrul Hisham Shaharin and student activist Adam Adli.
SMM chairperson Saiful Anang clarified that the protest is a peaceful assembly and they have the right to voice out their dissatisfaction regarding the result of GE13.
"This is the dirtiest general election ever in Malaysia and we will not accept its result.
"We want to meet EC chairman so that we can hand over our memorandum," he said.
In their memorandum, the group urged EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof to step down in order for EC to be reformed, to revoke the GE13 result, and to call for a new general election.
"We do not represent any political parties, but we represent the youth who rejected racial and dirty politics.
"Malaysian democracy has been violated by EC as the general election has not been carried out fairly," Saiful claimed, adding that they have proof of EC's misconduct during the general election.
Around 2.50pm, five group members, including Saiful and Adam, were allowed to enter the EC headquarters to hand over the memorandum. Saiful later said that an EC public relation officer had received their memorandum on behalf of its chairman.
"We give them a week to take action and if they fail to so, we will not hesitate to rally on the street on May 17," he said, adding that they will also try to seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah to hand over their memorandum.
The group had also brought two black coffins with "EC" and "GE13 is the dirtiest general election" marked on each coffin. The protest ended at 3.15pm.
