Penang to get first Chinese state assembly speaker

Penang is set to get the first Chinese state legislative speaker with the appointment of state PKR deputy chief Law Choo Kiang (below).

NONEThis was confirmed by Penang PKR chief Mansor Othman, when met by reporters following the swearing-in ceremony of the 10 state executive councillors at Dewan Sri Penang.

"Isn't it a good position to be the first Chinese speaker in Penang?" Mansor asked.

He said the previous speaker, PKR leader Abdul Halim Hussein, will not be given any position.

"What to do? He did not win any seats," he said, adding the deputy speaker's post will be given to Penanti assemblyperson Norlela Ariffin.

Mansor was bombarded with queries about whether the party's list for state exco was accepted by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in toto.

This followed speculation, prior to the start of the swearing-in ceremony, that there would be a boycott from PKR leaders as Law has been dropped from his state exco post.

Dismissing the matter, Mansor said the line-up was good and hopes the exco would perform well for Penang.

"Penang leads in many areas in the past. I am sure it will lead in many other areas this term," added Mansor, who is now Nibong Tebal MP.

"Sometimes, it is a bitter pill to swallow (for those who have been dropped or have no posts) but as leaders, we have to take it and continue our work," he stressed.
No Chinese PKR members in exco

When asked, Law said he was not disappointed at his change of fate, saying it was not related to his performance.

"Everyone knows how I performed in my exco position last term. This has been decided by the leadership, just as they had decided to appoint me in 2008," he said.

NONELaw said he had just been informed about his fate last night, but added "it is all out of my control".

Meanwhile, Chinese PKR leaders have expressed some dissatisfaction that there are no community representation in the line-up.

However, PKR Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin (right) said he does not believe in this argument.

"State exco members should be able to take care of all races. It is not a raced-based position.

"We need to have more seats in the rural areas and the selection of excos would ensure that. This team is very important as it has a big task ahead," he said.

The selection of exco members, Sin said, should be based on capabilities.

"PKR is a multiracial party where everyone has a place," he added.
