Pengerang talks end on sour note

A consultation session between the Kuo Kuang Petrochemical Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Pengerang residents today ended in chaos today when the former’s consultants attempted to leave the discussion early.

Upon seeing this, some residents attempted to stop their 4-wheel drive, but the consultants sped away anyway.

In the process, one of the vehicle’s side-view mirror slammed into DAP Socialist Youth Green Technology and Environment Bureau chief Marcus Siew’s right arm and fell off.

He then picked up the mirror, only to be surrounded by police officers, who demanded him to hand it over as evidence and follow them to the police station to give statement.

At this time, Mengkibol assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin tried to intervene but was shoved away by plainclothes police officers.

Speaking to reporters after giving his statement at the Sungai Rengit police station, Siew said he had held out his arm to stop the consultant’s vehicle, but did not expect them to accelerate and could not get out of the way in time.
Not enough time to speak

He said he had hoped to get clarification on when the next consultation session would be held.

About 300 persons attended the dialogue session today, which was supposed to get public feedback on Kuo Kwang’s plans to build a plant adjacent to the Petronas Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development (Rapid) project.

She also questioned the survey’s methodology, and whether the small participation can adequately reflect the views of the 10,000 residents affected by the projects.

“The attendees of the dialogue were not given sufficient time and opportunities to raise their concern,” she said.

She said more dialogue sessions should be held to address the resident’s concerns, and once the EIA is ready.

Meanwhile, Bakri MP Er Teck Hwa criticised the organiser’s behaviour as being indifferent to the resident’s concerns.
