Waytha upbeat in solving stateless issue in 5 years

Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairperson P Waythamoorthy said that he and Hindraf would be able to solve the issue of stateless Indians in the country within five years.

Waythamoorthy, who has recently been herded into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's new cabinet as deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said the opposition's promise to solve the same problem in 100 days should they come into power was misleading.

p waythamoorthy first pc as deputy minister"(PKR de facto leader) Anwar Ibrahim said he would solve all pending stateless issues in the National Registration Department (NRD) within 100 days. That's only 20,000," he said.

"But he is not talking about the 280,000 other stateless Indians that his own vice president N Surendran has claimed," he said during a press conference today.

Waythamoorthy said that Hindraf already has a mechanism to solve the stateless issue on a permanent basis, though he did not reveal what the mechanism was.
No deal on deputy minister's post
Waythamoorthy also denied that his appointment to a deputy minister's post was something that was agreed upon between Hindraf and BN during their memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing which took place last month.

"We had asked for a dedicated unit to be set up under the Prime Minister's Department in order to implement the five areas under the MoU and that someone responsible is tasked to head the unit. There was an understanding that we would head that unit," he said.

He also took a swipe at Hindraf's critics from "the opposition and also from within the government", saying that he did not "care about whatever they have to say."

"We will make you (critics) eat your own words. People will take care of you in the next election for misleading the people. None of you actually cared for the displaced estate workers," he further added.

Waythamoorthy said that Hindraf leaders were "victims" of a political campaign which they had no part of.

"The election was a battle between political parties. But the irony is we became the victims, they criticised us instead," he said.

Waythamoorthy is expected to know an exact date for him to be sworn in as a senator on Monday before he officially joins the cabinet.
