During the hype when Malaysians awaited for 5 May 2013 polling day, Opposition leader Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim had threatened the public proclaiming that should Pakatan fail to capture Putrajaya this round, he would quit politics and take up an academic’s post very likely abroad.
It is coming to two weeks since Malaysians casted their ballots which returned the ruling Barisan Nasional to office with 133 parliamentary constituencies as opposed to the Opposition pact which snared 89 seats.
Using the masses to achieve one’s own political aim
While MCA has honoured our resolution not to accept government posts, it is time for Anwar to keep to his words and cease finding excuses for his failure. Disappointingly, instead of honouring his words, Anwar and his honchos have launched a series of black t-shirt rallies starting with Kelana Jaya, followed by Penang, Perak and Johor with the intention of creating havoc to initiate an Arab Spring-like movement to topple the duly elected federal government.
Pakatan urging supporters to participate in rallies also hoodwinked gullible yet idealistic Malaysians to stage an illegal gathering at Merlion Park, Singapore resulting with 21 arrests of whom one had his work permit revoked, while another two had their visit passes cancelled. Was Anwar and co. aware that their irresponsible call for mass rallies not only disrespects Malaysia’s long-practised democratic system, but can even jeopardise Malaysia’s diplomatic links with the island-republic and cause Malaysians to be fired from their jobs when they violate the law overseas?
All these examples prove that Anwar is so selfish that he is trying all out to destroy the country including victimizing his own supporters for his personal political agenda.
Be responsible
As a public figure, one should take responsibility for one’s pledge. Thus, if the PKR ketua umum is a man with principles and dignity, then Anwar should stick to his promises and quit now. PKR Vice President S. Surendran is as disappoint as his statement defending Anwar that Anwar is “duty bound to continue as Pakatan’s leader” owing to rally size lacks integrity. As a first-time lawmaker and a lawyer by training, surely Surendran knows better about the value of honouring one’s words.
