Five Pakatan leaders probed over Adam Adli vigil

After arresting and charging Pakatan Rakyat leaders for organising the 'Black 505' rallies, police are now going after another five opposition figures who attended the May 22 candlelight vigil in support of student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim.
They are Puchong MP Gobind Singh, Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw, Sekinchan assemblyperson Ng Suee Lim and former Pandamaran assemblyperson Ronnie Liu , all from DAP, as well as PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub.

Ng told Malaysiakini today that his office had received a summons from the Kepong police station yesterday for him to give his statement on Wednesday, which has passed.

"Gobind has contacted the police to arrange a date next week for himself, Liu and me to give our statements.

NONE"Tan has already given his statement and Salahuddin is slated to give his statement today, according to media reports," Ng said.

They are being investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code, which deals with illegal gatherings.
They can be punished with six months' jail or a fine or both if convicted under this section.

Ng revealed that the police themselves had lodged the reports against the five of them.

On the evening of May 22, some 1,000 people gathered outside  the Jinjang police station in a show of solidarity for student activist Adam Adli (left), who was detained and later charged with uttering seditious remarks.

'Cops should focus on crimes'

The police then arrested 18 people after the crowd refused to disperse. Some of the detainees later claimed that they had beenassaulted by the police personnel.

NONENg (left) added that the police should not be taking action against them, since assembly is allowed by the Peaceful Assembly Act as long as it is peaceful.

"I regret the investigation against us. Instead of using their powers to persecute elected representatives, the police should address the issue of crime. They should focus their resources on fighting crime.

"I think Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants to elevate his image before the Umno party elections by manipulating the police to crack down on the opposition. However, we will give our full cooperation to the police," Ng said.

NONEPAS organHarakahdaily reported today that Salahuddin (right) has been instructed by the police to present himself at the Kepong police station today.

However, Salahuddin did not state which rally had been referred to by the police.

He described the investigation as a form of retaliation against the opposition, and yet further proof that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is a leader who cannot be trusted.

"Before this, Najib promised to respect human rights. Seems like all these are just lies, and he completely cannot be trusted," Salahuddin is quoted as saying.

He stressed that the people would not be intimidated by such tactics.
