Inspector wanted over Dhamendran's death

Police are on the hunt for a police officer who went missing after he was suspected of being involved in the death of N Dhamendran at the Kuala Lumpur police lockup last May 21.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said police were intensifying efforts to track down the suspect, an inspector, after three policemen were charged for the Dharmenderan's murder last Wednesday.

"God willing, we will get him soon," he told a media conference after witnessing the handing over of duty of Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, a post previously held by deputy IGP Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin, to Hadi Ho Abdullah, the former deputy CID director.

Last Wednesday, three policemen, a sergeant and two with the rank of corporal, were charged in the Magistrate Court with Dhamendran's murder.

The offence carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

In another development, Khalid said police were studying improvements to be made to standard operating procedures (SOP) on handling of detainees at their lockups.

He said several factors had to be looked into before they could be implemented.

"We are preparing a comprehensive plan. We need time. God willing, the new SOP can be implemented end of this month," he added.
