'Interlok TV series okay, minus contentious words'

There should be no problems coming up with the serialised TV drama based on the controversial book ‘Interlok’ as it will not involve any contentious words.

NONEAccording to the Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek (left), he said that adaptations from a book to a film or TV series are unlikely to include every part of the book.

"The issue with Interlok is certain words used in it, not the storyline, theme etc.

"I will monitor this to see how far it has raised anxieties, but there are no problems with it so far," he said.

‘Interlok’, a book by National Laureate Abdullah Hussein, caused an uproar when it was introduced as the text for the Bahasa Malaya literature component for Form Five students.

It was amended to remove certain word or passages deemedoffensive to the Indian community, but was eventually removedfrom the syllabus.

Asked if the TV serial is funded by the government, he said: "I'm not sure of that".

Yesterday, the National Indian Rights Action Team (Niat) said that the government is providing RM1 million for a 13-episodedramatised version of the novel.

The series, which will begin shooting in July, is expected to be aired on RTM.

Niat said that it will disrupt production if the government does not cancel the shooting.

The group is also planning to hold a protest on June 24, when the new session of parliament convenes.
