The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has strongly refuted comments by PKR Wanita head Zuraida Kamaruddin that linked the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu to the premier.
Describing the allegation as "malicious, baseless and unfounded", Najib Abdul Razak's (right) press secretary Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad also said this is "part of a continuous campaign by the opposition parties to undermine the position of the prime minister".
In a letter to Malaysiakini, Tengku Sariffuddin demanded that the news portal withdraws its report on Zuraida's remarks, as well as publishes a written apology within seven days.
"Failing this, we will consider seeking legal recourse against those involved in making and publishing this baseless, unfounded and malicious allegation," he added.
Malaysiakini is in the process of responding to the PMO, offering the premier a right to reply.
At a press conference last week, Zuraida had referred to the prime minister as the "main culprit" in the murder of Altantuya - a claim that Najib has repeatedly denied vehemently.
Zuraida was picking up on comments by Women, Community and Family Development Minister Rohani Karim that the case had been"dealt with".
