Premature announcement of new velodrome criticised

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today questioned the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Naim Mohamad's wisdom to announce the construction of a class-one covered velodrome although a final decision has yet to be made.

The proposal to build a class-one covered velodrome has not been finalised and still in the discussion stage, said Khairy.

"The Youth and Sports Ministry has not made a final decision with regard to the proposal to build a class-one covered velodrome as announced by Naim Mohamad.

"He has no right to make such an announcement regarding the velodrome. I have asked the National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Zolkples Embong to reprimand Naim because he is not the person to make such announcements before a decision was made.

"Discussions were held between NSC and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) recently but it was just a preliminary discussion," Khairy told reporters at his office in Putrajaya today.

Khairy said building an international class-one covered velodrome needs a careful study because it involves tax payers’ money.

During the 2013 Budget, the government had allocated RM80 million to build an indoor velodrome in Nilai, Negri Sembilan while the DBKL also has plans to build a class-one covered velodrome in Kuala Lumpur to replace the existing Kuala Lumpur Velodrome that is expected to be demolished to make way for a commercial project.

Naim had on recently announced that a class-one covered velodrome would be build in Kuala Lumpur and not in Nilai, Negri Sembilan as proposed earlier.
