UEM Builders distances itself from 2nd Bridge collapse

UEM Builders Bhd today disassociated itself with the collapse at the construction site of the Second Penang Bridge, saying it is not the main contractor.

According to Bernama, UEM Builders said in a statement here it is only responsible for the superstructure works of approach spans on the bridge (Package 2) and was not involved in constructing other parts of the bridge.

azlan"Thus it is not and has no relation with the contractor appointed to construct Package A, the Batu Maung Interchange," UEM Builders said.

The statement also provides the list of project descriptions and contractors involved in the project.

Sourced from Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd's website, the list shows that the contractor for Package 3A is Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd.

The statement was issued following news reports that said UEM Builders is the main contractor for the bridge.

The interchange ramp of the Penang Second Bridge, which is under construction at Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu here, collapsed about 7.15pm yesterday.

Yesterday, a Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd spokesman said the part that collapsed did not involve the bridge structure itself that was under construction but only involved the concrete ramp and steel girders in Package 3A at the exit passage from the bridge to the highway on the island.
The spokesman said the project was being managed by the contractor, Cergas Murni.

Three injured, fourth still trapped
The collapse injured three people, while a fourth was as at 5.30am today, still trapped in a car under the rubble, Utusan Malaysiareported.
NONEThe daily said rescue workers were having difficulty freeing the victim as the vehicle was pinned under 300 tonnes of rubble spread over about 50 metres of the road.

Berita Harian, meanwhile. reported that Jambatan Kedua is to hand over compensation of RM10,000 per victim.

In a statement today, Gerakan Youth deputy chief Oh Tong Keong called for an immediate investigation to find out the root cause of the “regrettable accident”.

“There have been many incidents of buildings and other construction projects collapsing and with each incident the loss of life is heartbreaking.

“I call for an immediate investigation to ascertain what went wrong. If there has been any negligence on the part of the contractor, then action must be taken,” Oh said.
