PETALING JAYA - The stakes in the March 23 Kajang by-election just got higher with former minister Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim announcing his decision to contest against much-fancied de facto Pakatan Rakyat leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Zaid is among a motley group of four independents comprising former MIC Youth chief Datuk S. Nallakaruppan, 1980s dangdut singer Herman Tino and legal assistant Yuktes Vijay.
Zaid's entry could make things more complicated for Anwar as the former senator appears to be ready to campaign on a pro-Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim platform against the backdrop of a mentri besar unwilling to make way for a possible successor in the de facto PR leader.
With the so-called "Kajang rebellion" in the air allegedly involving a Khalid reluctant to vacate his office, Anwar's Kajang move seems to be inviting one intrigue after another.
The by-election may not be a walkover for Anwar despite his larger than life profile and the many advantages accruing to a national figure coming down to state level. - The Sundaily
