The Penang government must consider the lack of students studying at Tamil primary schools (SJKT) in the state before applying for approval to build a Tamil secondary school (SMJKT), stressed Education deputy minister II, P Kamalanathan.
"Can you please help us to increase the number of students and get more Indians to go to Tamil schools before asking for a secondary school," he told reporters after a special meeting with Tamil school headmasters and senior assistants in Georgetown yesterday.
He was asked to comment on the call by the state government and certain non government organisations for the federal government to build the first Malaysian Tamil secondary school in Penang.
Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng had earlier on, disclosed that the state government's application to build a secondary school in Butterworth was rejected by the federal government; he had allegedly questioned why Tamil schools were being discriminated against.
According to Kamalanathan, only 837 Tamil school students sat for the PMR last year, while only 468 sat for the SPM.
On the delay of the construction of the new building and additional block for the SJKT, Kamalanathan explained that the Indian contractor engaged for the project had failed to meet the technical specifications.
