Lashing out at the MIC president, S Vell Paari said the haze which has reduced visibility in many parts of the country has also made G Palanivel invisible.
The former central working committee member took the natural resources and environment minister to task for not explaining to concerned Malaysians about the haze situation.
Vell Paari, who is the Kepong MIC chairperson, said the minister should have also called on the Education Ministry to close schools due to the unhealthy air pollutant index (API).
According to the son of Palanivel’s predecessor S Samy Vellu, the MIC president is more interested in protecting the Pandas coming here from China.
"He (Palanivel) is not interested in the lives of Malaysians or the Malaysian wildlife. He is seen to be paying more attention on how to take care of the pandas from China, which are yet to come here.
"As the minister responsible for
the environment, Palanivel has a duty to care for the citizens of Malaysia and to explain the real situation. But I think he is not bothered," he said.
Citing other examples, Vell Paari (left) said when there are matters concerning health such as the dengue and H1N1 outbreaks, the minister in charge of the portfolio is expected to issue media statements, provide updates and ensure that the people do not panic.
"Even during the Lahad Datu intrusion, the home minister and defence minister were on the ground at the expense of their safety.
"But Palanivel is not even bothered to issue any directives for the safety of our children and elderly folks. Do we need this kind of a irresponsible minister?" he asked.
'Special envoy for temples'
Air quality rose to unhealthy levels in and around Kuala Lumpur yesterday, as smoke from forest fires and open burning added to the burden of water rationing after a month-long drought.
The API climbed to as high as 137 in Port Klang yesterday, with seven parts of Kuala Lumpur and the states of Selangor and Negri Sembilan recording levels above 100, which is classified as unhealthy.
Vell Paari pointed out that Malaysians are in a state of alarm due to the haze and it is incumbent upon Palanivel to take charge of the situation and offer assistance if not solutions.
"From May till September last year, the country experienced one of the worst haze situation. During the period, Palanivel reacted very late, only after getting lambasted by various politicians and non-governmental associations.
"Since then, we have had flash floods, dam outpourings and now an equally bad haze, but Palanivel is nowhere to be seen. Does he need to be pushed every time?" he asked.
In fact, Vell Paari stressed that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is forced to execute Palanivel’s duties as well.
"The prime minister cannot do it all while Palanivel is holidaying either in India or Australia. In my opinion, I would suggest Palanivel to be appointed as the Special Envoy of Temples to India. That is what he (Palanivel) does best,” he added.
Due to Palanivel's “lackluster performance”, Vell Paari suggested that Najib should make public the key performance indicators (KPI) for Palanivel and his ministry.
"I am very curious whether Palanivel has any KPI, as he is seen to be nowhere near of fulfilling it. I am sure issuing statements once in a blue moon does not satisfy the KPI,” he added.
