Najib: Me! Pressure 'superpower' Obama?

Denying that he forced the US president not to meet Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak remarked: "Who can pressure (Barack) Obama... Obama, superpower."

"He is the president of the United States. We are just a small country," he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting this evening.

Najib was responding to Anwar's allegation that he had pressured Obama not to meet the opposition leader during his three-day visit to Malaysia, starting tomorrow.

Previously, PKR expressed regret that Obama did not include a meeting with Anwar in his itinerary and warned that it would affect the US' image as a defender of justice.

PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli had said that a "strong message" was conveyed to the US State Department over this.

He also accused Obama of putting business interest above other issues with regard to inking the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

'Supreme council backs me on hudud'

Meanwhile, Najib said the Umno supreme council agreed with his statement that the government is not against hudud as a divine law but that numerous issues must be resolved before it can be implemented.

"The supreme council agrees with what I said. Let us see what is the development on that issue after this," he added.

Najib also responded to the suggestion from Kelantan Umno liaison chief Mustapa Mohamed that a discussion be held between PAS and Umno to ensure that hudud is implemented in the state.

"We don’t know what is PAS' proposal. If PAS is willing to put it forward to us, we are prepared to see what PAS proposes," he said.

PAS, which governs Kelantan, is pushing for the implementation of the Islamic criminal law in the state.
