Anwar says Obama right on minority woes

Dismissing Home Minister Ahmad Zahid's rebuttal, Anwar Ibrahim said there are genuine concerns for the ethnic minorities in Malaysia regarding their treatment.

"It doesn't matter what Zahid says. What do you expect the home minister to say?" he told a press conference.

Zahid yesterday said the Malaysian government was fair to all in response to US President Barack Obama’s remark that Malaysia would not succeed if non-Muslims are not given equal opportunities as Muslims.

Anwar said Obama's views on this was shaped by his meeting with civil society groups during his brief visit to Malaysia over the weekend.

On the same note, the opposition leader said the poor in Malaysia are also being marginalised, majority of whom are Malay bumiputeras and the true indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak.

'Emperor' Najib rapped

Anwar also offered a scathing criticism of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for telling Obama that he was a "reformer".

"That has been Najib's (right) excuse for the past decade. This is just a pretext to deflect or provide an excuse for utter incompetence and ineptitude," he said.

"Why are you the PM of a country if you cannot defend the dignity or honour of every citizen?

"A PM in Malaysia has powers like an emperor, and you are telling me he is a reformer who is powerless?" he asked.

Anwar said that Najib can't distance himself or take no actions against the likes of right wing NGO Perkasa and former MP Zulkifli Noordin.

"You (Najib) are funding Perkasa. You cannot say you can't do anything about them. Zulkifli Noordin, you fielded him as a candidate in the last election," he said.

"How about the bible issue? You can't do anything either?" he added.
