Ex-CJ: I meant another harmony committee

Former Chief Justice of Malaysia Abdul Hamid Mohamad, who earlier said he rejected the offer to become the Chairman of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), said today there was an error in his statement on July 2.

He explained that the offer he had rejected actually was the Chairmanship of the Committee for the Promotion of Inter-Faith Understanding and Harmony (JKMPKA) or which had a name which sounded almost the same.

"Actually, I had made a mistake when referring to NUCC in the sentence. I should have referred to JKMPKA.

"The committee is also placed under the National Unity dan Integration Department, Prime Minister's Department. I apologise for the error," he said in a statement here.

The former Chief Justice, in a feature article entitled 'I don't want to be a traitor' published by Utusan Malaysia on July 2, stated that he had rejected the offer to become NUCC chairman (actually JKMPKA chairman) because he did not want to become the stooge of a certain party.

'Unfair to work for free'

Abdul Hamid pointed out that besides asking on the scope of functions and activities of the NUCC committee in the past, he had also asked on the allowance as chairman of the committee.

"Based on experience, I wanted to know whether if I accepted the offer, it was hoped that I would carry out the task free of charge.

"This is the task of the minister and officers under the minister. It is unfair if they ask me and members of the committee to do their work for free whereas they receive salaries," he said.

However, he pointed out that the salary issue was not the reason that he turned down the offer of the JKMPKA chairmanship because the rejection was made before he had received any reply including on the allowance.

"Even until today I have not received any reply to my letter, because it is no longer relevant," he said.

"What I emphasise is to uphold our Constitution, improve what is not right in its domain. The germs on the leg should not be placed on one's head," Abdul Hamid said.
