KL 'more like Mecca' with anti-beggar move

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor will only make Kuala Lumpur more like the holy city of Mecca by chasing beggars away to the outskirts, an Umno colleague has said.

In defending the minister, Federal Territories Umno secretary Syed Ali Alhabshee (right) said Tengku Adnan's move to mete out on-the-spot fines to alm givers and receivers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur was misconstrued by his detractors.

The swift move would take away an eyesore for tourists and at the same time help the homeless, he said.

"You know when I was in Mecca, there were many black people (orang hitam) that were asking for alms. Now, not anymore. How they do it, I don't know? But if they can do it, why can't we?

"Don't let people see that KL-lites suffer such difficulties- lying on the street, no clothes, torn pants. It's sickening," Syed Ali told Malaysiakini in an interview in Cheras.

Syed Ali, who also the Umno Cheras chief, said he was disappointed that more party colleagues were not speaking up for their leader, and so he was doing so.

"Today, I see a  lot of statements of accusation made by the opposition. How many people from our people (Umno), our division leaders have spoken up, gave their opinions, made their points heard? We must speak up if we want to change anything," said Syed Ali.

He said even Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak tweeted that the minister should seek the counsel of soup kitchen operators.

"I am a party man. Whatever is right, is right, whatever is wrong is wrong. Tengku Adnan (left) is trying to shoulder the weight of the homeless.

"But as a minister, he is trying to make KL clean. He said we must find out ways to get all these people to go to one area outside KL so that tourists won't think that something is wrong and that we are not helping all these people sleeping on the streets.

“And worse, when all these people from overseas come and also become a beggar."

Ku Nan ‘uses own money to help’

Instead, Syed Ali said that the opposition-backed media and news portals were to blame for hyping up the issue.

"Don't spin this sort of thing as if we don't have a heart for the homeless. If Umno don't look after the poor, we won't be giving out (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia)  BR1M and whatever else that we do.  It is a good intention, wrongly interpreted by everybody."

"I want to tell you, Tengku Adnan gave out a lot of his money helping all these type of people. I know, because I am the secretary (of Umno FT)," the former senator said.

Syed Ali said that he himself sometimes went down to Chow Kit to find poor people and help them but conceded that even he cannot compare to Tengku Adnan’s generosity.

In Cheras alone, about 1,000 people will be given aid these Ramadhan period, he cited.

"We have to look and take care of them. We give whatever we need to give," he said.

After drawing heavy fire for its plan to take in beggars, fine those who give alms, and place a ban on soup kitchens (left) within a two-kilometre radius of Bukit Bintang, Tengku Adnan had on Friday stated that plans were underway to set up "one-stop centres" for the poor and homeless.

He said the move was aimed at cleaning up KL's image,

However, he also promised to discuss other solutions with soup kitchens and NGOs.
