Najib wants emergency sitting over MH17

MH17 Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak tonight sought an emergency parliamentary sitting following the alleged downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine.

The premier, who was clad in black Baju Melayu, also announced that the national flag would be flown at half-mast beginning tonight until Monday

“In asserting a firm stance by the Malaysian people, I as the prime minister, have decided to call an emergency parliamentary sitting to strongly condemn the inhumane action,” he said in a national address on TV1 tonight.

Najib condemned the attack as “inhumane, uncivilised, violent and irresponsible” but said the country will not assign blame until evidence is adduced.

“Even though MH17 is believed to have been shot down, but at this point, we are not pointing fingers at anyone for the action until there is concrete evidence that can be verified,” he said.

However, Najib said Malaysia has three demands and these have been conveyed to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon who spoke to the premier earlier today.

The three demands were for the relevant quarters to allow recovery teams safe passage to the crash site, not to interfere with evidence there so that an independent investigation can be conducted, and for those responsible to face justice if they indeed shot down Flight MH17.

Najib acknowledged that the crash site was being controlled by Russian-backed Ukrainian rebels and said all diplomatic channels were being used to facilitate access for investigators and the recovery of the dead.

“I have also asked Russian President Vladamir Putin to give every cooperation in order to achieve the said objectives,” he said.

‘US confident MH17 shot down’

Najib, in his 10-minute address, also urged Malaysians of all religions to unite in prayer amid the tragedy.

Flight MH17 departed from Amsterdam on July 17 at 12.15pm Malaysian time and was due to arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 6.10am.

However, Ukrainian air traffic control reported that it lost contact with the aircraft carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew at 10pm Malaysian time and was later discovered to have crashed near the border between Ukraine and Russia.

In a related development, Bernama quoted Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia as saying that the emergency parliamentary sitting will be convened next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama, in a press conference in Washington DC some 10 minutes after Najib’s, said evidence indicated Flight MH17 was shot down.

“What we have confidence in saying is a surface-to-air missile was fired and that is what brought down the jet.

“We have confidence in saying that the shot came from territory controlled by Russian-backed separatists,” he said.

However, Obama said the specific individuals or personnel responsible for ordering the strike is still a subject of investigation.

He also confirmed that at least one US citizen was on board the ill-fated flight.
