Scorned & derided by the world but Bung thinks he's so funny: 'I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH PEOPLE'
An over-excited Malaysian MP has provoked a barrage of scorn on Twitter with a six-word message of congratulations to Germany's World Cup team.
"WELL DONE..BRAVO...LONG LIVE HITLER..."
The first words were fine.
It was the second three that triggered a flurry of incredulous tweets, starting with a simple "WTF?"
Moktar Radin was reacting to the German team's impressive 7-1 win over a struggling Brazil on Tuesday. The rout knocked the home team out of World Cup contention, causing grief in Brazil and elation in Germany.
The Malaysian MP sent the tweet to some 20,000 followers and then stayed online to send barbs back to his detractors.
To @shaike49's contention that he was a "low class crazy MP," the politician responded: "u can get lost... and enjoy with the loser.."
To @layzebone's direct statement: "You're an idiot... educate yourself," the MP said "say its to ur self."
An obviously avid football fan, Bung is a member of the United Malays National Organization, one of Malaysia's largest and oldest political parties.
He remains unrepentant about his tweet, telling Malaysia's Star Online, "I don't know what's wrong with people sometimes."
"Hitler is part of history and the German team fought like how he did," he said.
In a statement, Germany's Ambassador to Malaysia Holger Michael said: "While we appreciate the admiration for the German football team, we strongly reject the unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler."
It remains illegal in Germany to glorify Hitler or the Nazi Party, or to display symbols of the regime including flags, uniforms and slogans.
On Wednesday, the Malaysian Chinese Association demanded an apology from the MP.
In a statement on its website, the group's religious harmony bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said he was "ashamed and appalled" by the tweet.
"From insulting women to disabled people, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar is no stranger to controversy, but now his zero common sense in attributing Germany's win to Hitler will make Malaysia the centre of a negative attention once again."
He went on: "It is bad enough that Malaysia has become (in)famous after some of our citizens were reported to have become militants by joining the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); we do not need to be known as a country which supports neo-Nazism and its warped belief of genetic superiority of the Aryan race, and annihilation of ethnicities deemed inferior." -http://edition.cnn.com
