The alleged burglary and sexual assault by a Malaysian diplomat in New Zealand is disturbing. It is good to know that our government is finally taking the correct step of sending the alleged perpetrator back to New Zealand for due process of law. We would expect the same if the situation was reversed.
But there are two crimes here. The alleged burglary and sexual assault by a Malaysian diplomat AND the cover-up by Malaysians officials. The first crime is uncertain and will require evidence in a court of law. The second crime is CERTAIN but no action has been taken yet.
It is a shame and stain on our government that senior officers were involved in attempting to cover up such a heinous crime. What action is begin taken to identify ALL the Malaysians officials who assisted in the cover-up – both based in New Zealand and in Malaysia?
Both the Malaysian and New Zealand public need to see swift and significant action by our government in this area to restore confidence in our diplomatic service. This action must be made known to the public.
Finally, it is vital our government should issue a full apology to the victim and the people of New Zealand for the lapse in proper behaviour.
