'Unapologetic' Khalid gets royal snub

Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has turned down Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad's request to seek an audience with the ruler.

The decision was based on the PAS leader's letter to the palace, which did not include an apology.

Khalid had sought an audience after the sultan last Tuesday publicly slammed him for suggesting to curb the powers of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).

Selangor sultan's private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani announced the decision today, citing the nature of Khalid's letter to the palace which was sent on Friday..

News portal Agenda Daily quoted him as saying that Sultan Sharafuddin may have considered granting an audience had the letter been an apology but instead it was a request to explain himself.

He added that Sultan Sharafuddin did not want to grant him an audience as everyone already understood Khalid's meaning clearly.

"There is no need to give any explanation to tuanku. It is best that he explain to the rakyat about his telling to the whole world that he wanted to do away with Mais' executive powers.

"Tuanku's word to Khalid is for him to explain to the rakyat like how he did (with Mais) last time by doing it through the media. There is no need for an audience with the sultan," he said.

On June 17, Khalid called for Mais' powers to be curbed after it instructed the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) not to return over 300 copies of the Bible which it confiscated from the Bible Society of Malaysia.

Khalid was accompanied by Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, Kota Raja MP Siti Mariah Mahmud and Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat when he made the statement at a press conference in the lobby of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Khalid told Malaysiakini that he did not wish to comment on the sultan's decision for now.

"I assume there would be an official reply, since I wrote in officially, and I will respond after I get the reply, if need be," he said.
