KOTA KINABALU: Unconfirmed reports in the Sabah capital said that the Abu Sayyaf group in the southern Philippines has freed Kunak fish breeder Chan Sai Chuin, 32, after 182 days in captivity.
He was kidnapped on June 16 from his fish farm in Sapong, Kunak. His kidnappers demanded a RM3 million ransom for his release.
The reports said that Chan, shaken but unharmed, was seen in Sandakan where he arrived by speedboat at about 6.45 am on Wed and given a medical check-up. His wife Chin Pek Nyen, 42, was also reportedly present to greet his return.
It was learnt that Filipino and Malaysian negotiators worked together to secure his release.
Negotiations still continue to secure the release of Malaysian policeman Kons Zakiah Aleip, 26, who was spirited away by the Abu Sayyaf into captivity from Pulau Mabul on July 12. The militants have demanded RM3 million for his release.
The Sabah police are expected to issue a statement soon.
