Activist Hishamuddin Rais was found guilty of sedition for urging people to hold street demonstrations to topple the government at a forum two years ago, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court ruled today.
Sessions judge Azman Mustapha said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
"He should not have instigated those present to go to the streets because he was unhappy with the outcome of the general election," he said.
Lawyer Syahredzan Johan is now mitigating for lighter sentence.
Hishamuddin, 64, uttered the words at the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall in Jalan Maharajalela in the capital city on May 13, 2013.
Hishamuddin and five others had spoken at the gathering, which was held after the 13th general election on May 5 that year.
Calling the elections results unfair, they had asked people to bring down the federal government.
