Singapore on watch for attacks by ‘lone wolf’ militants

“Isis may have worsened the threat through its widespread and effective use of social media to radicalise and recruit foreign fighters and supporters.”
singapore isis2SINGAPORE: The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis), isn’t generally a threat at the moment to Singapore, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister, Teo Chee Hean, has assured Parliament. “However, the threat level has increased in every country as Isis draws support from abroad and encourages its supporters to carry out attacks in their home countries.”
He was replying to MP Alex Yam Ziming on whether Isis had increased the threat level to Singapore, and if so, whether new measures are required to deal with radicalisation.
Radicalisation, conceded Teo, could be a problem if it throws up “lone wolf” attacks.
“Isis may have worsened the threat through its widespread and effective use of social media to radicalise and recruit foreign fighters and supporters. There was radicalisation in Singapore even before Isis.”
Singapore, he added, will be hosting the East Asia Summit Symposium on Religious Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration in April this year. “The Symposium will share best practices among participating countries and build capability to counter the terrorists’ radical ideology.”
“There’s a need to deal upstream with the ideology that fuels jihadist terrorism.”
