‘Baju Kurung’ ban for non-Muslim teachers too?

MCA says that it would be paradox if a non-Malay educator is allowed to wear the “baju kurung” to school but non-Malay students aren’t.
Chong Sin Woon baju kurungPETALING JAYA: MCA’s National Youth Chairman, Chong Sin Woon has expressed his “outrage” that school authorities of SMK Seri Mutiara Cheras, denied entry to a Form 3 student because she was a non-Malay wearing a “baju kurung” school uniform.
The school reportedly told the native Sarawakian that the “baju kurung” was exclusively for Malay students, and non-Malays had to wear pinafores instead.
In a media statement, Chong who is also MCA’s Education Consultative Council member said, “There are female non-Malay school teachers and principals in other schools who dress in the traditional ‘baju kurung’ too when reporting for work.
“Isn’t it a paradox if a non-Malay educator is allowed to don the ‘baju kurung’ but non-Malay students are not?”
Chong also said the way in which the school handled the situation was unacceptable as the student was not only sent home, but her guardian uncle reportedly told to get BR1M funds if he lacked the sufficient cash to buy new uniforms.
Criticising the school for traumatising the student and her guardians, Chong also pointed out that Malaysians took pride in wearing the traditional costumes of other races and that the practice enhanced inter-ethnic respect and appreciation.
“There is no reason or justification whatsoever, for SMK Seri Mutiara to deliberately deprive a child of an education, or belittle the financial status of her guardian uncle,” said Chong.
Chong also called for all female school students, both in primary and secondary school to wear “baju kurung” if they have one, to their respective schools, as a sign of solidarity.
