The group of 25 (G25) prominent Malays was last night given an assurance that they will be granted a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
G25 spokesman Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin told The Malaysian Insider that a meeting with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) representative last night had been positive.
"It was very positive. We will issue a media statement tomorrow (today) regarding tonight's meeting," Noor Farida told The Malaysian Insider.
"We are all very happy. This is a good meeting before the actual appointment with the prime minister," she said without elaborating.
Last night's meeting included PMO representative Datuk Jailani Ngah, who is also Najib's political secretary, and representatives from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and shariah lawyers.
Noor Farida, however, said no date has been set for the meeting with Najib.
(Last evening's) meeting was merely to discuss the agenda of the meeting with the prime minister, she said.
The meeting comes a month after G25 issued an open letter urging Najib to end extremist rhetoric and resolve disputes arising from the application of Islamic law in the country.
Earlier yesterday, Noor Farida in a statement had said the date for last night's meeting had been agreed upon on December 22 between herself and Jailani.
"The meeting is being held on the instructions of the prime minister for the relevant government agencies to meet with the G25 and to come up with suitable recommendations for his consideration regarding the issues that the G25 had raised in the open letter," she had said.
