K-Pop hugs: PAS backs punishment of girls

The party's ulama wing disagrees with calls for counselling.
kpop_pas_300PETALING JAYA: PAS’ Ulama Wing has voiced its support for the punishment of the Muslim girls who hugged or were hugged by K-Pop musicians two weekends ago and has called for action against the organisers of the concert.
In an opinion piece published by Harakah, Ahmad Mouhyiddin Hassim, the operational director of the wing’s research establishment, criticises those who have denounced Jais for going after the girls and Jakim for threatening action against the concert organisers.
He says he disagrees with the calls for counselling of the offenders as opposed to punishment.
Citing several classical authorities, he says counselling is appropriate only when society is generally unaware that a certain action is an offence.
In the case of the hugging incident, he contends that Malaysia’s Muslim society is aware that it is “as much an offence as theft, fornication and rape” and punishment is therefore appropriate.
He says Islam allows authorities to use the power to punish in such cases.
“It must be stressed that such aberrations will continue as long as the Federal Government does not undertake a comprehensive implementation of the Islamic Syariah,” he adds.
