MCA: MyEG’s extra fee will hurt Chinese traders

Company's monopoly contradicts 'free-market' spirit and affects the rice bowl of foreign workers' agencies.
MYEGPETALING JAYA: MCA urged the government today to retract and re-evaluate the recent decision by the Home Ministry which makes MyEG the sole avenue for worker permit renewal.
Its Publicity Bureau chairman, Chai Kim Sen, who is also the Federation of Malaysian Chinese Guilds Association, said he had received many complaints on MyEG’s web-based transaction.
“That fact is many Chinese businesses have yet to go online,” he said in a press statement today.
Chai clarified that MCA had no issue with MyEG’s increased portfolio, but it should not be a monopoly.
“For example, MyEG is an agent for road-tax renewal with extra charges, but it is not a monopoly because vehicle owners can also choose some other channels for renewal.
“The monopoly in permit and insurance matters for foreign workers not only contradicts the ‘free-market’ spirit but has also affected the rice bowl of foreign workers’ agencies and insurance companies, as well as burdens the employers, who will now have to pay an extra RM38 per worker,” he said.
According to Chai, a good international reputation is crucial for continued foreign investment, and taxes and insurance are not business-friendly which the government is trying to propagate.
He added that there was a need for a revamp within government agencies for long-term solutions without “creating a monopoly.”
“As such, we urge the government to retract and re-evaluate the decision. It will be good if employers can have more choices, or at least some buffer time frame,” said Chai.
