New Sarawak seats unlawful, says Izzah

She warns that Pakatan will reject any re-delineation not done according to the law.
nurul izzah2KUCHING: PKR vice president and Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar today demanded that the Election Commission (EC) immediately stop its current delineation of electoral boundaries in Sarawak because it is breaking the law.
She said that the re-delineation must be subject to the resolution of issues that have arisen, preferably under a bipartisan committee, as practised in the United Kingdom, for example.
She queried why new state seats were being created in Sarawak without any increase in the number of parliamentary seats.
She reminded the EC that Pakatan Rakyat had already made its position clear on any re-delineation. “We will reject any re-delineation not done according to law.”
She alleged that the re-delineation in Sarawak, confined as it is to state seats, was in violation of Section 7 of the Elections Act.
“No election area within a state seat in a parliamentary seat can be transferred to another state seat in another parliamentary area. But this is happening in Sarawak.”
She cited these examples:
  • Batu Kawah voting district in the Batu Lintang state seat in the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat transferred to the Batu Kawah state seat in the Stampin parliamentary seat;
  • Sungai Apin in the Sebuyau state seat in the Batang Lupar parliamentary seat transferred to the Simunjan state seat in the Batang Sadong parliamentary seat;
  • Tanjong Beluku in the Sebuyau state seat in the Batang Lupar parliamentary seat transferred to the Simunjan state seat in the Batang Sadong parliamentary seat;
  • Slangking in the Sebuyau state seat in the Batang Sadong parliamentary seat transferred to the Simunjan state seat in the Batang Sadong parliamentary seat; and
  • Selalang in the Belawai state seat (now Kuala Rajang) in the Tanjong Manis parliamentary seat transferred to the Kabong state seat in the Saratok parliamentary seat.
She said the current process was not transparent and a step backwards when compared with the process in 2005.
In 2013, Nanas-Pisang in the Batu Lintang state seat had 2,974 voters, she said. “This time, this voting district has been transferred to the Batu Kawah state seat but has only 2,021 voters.”
“What happened to another 953 names which were on the electoral rolls in 2013?
