21 make statements to MCMC after crackdown on Internet rumours
KUALA LUMPUR: One person was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of spreading false news on the devastating East Coast monsoon floods, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said today.
The penalty under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 is a fine of up to RM50,000 or a year’s jail or both.
The commission said 21 had turned up since Dec 29 to have their statements recorded at the MCMC office in Cyberjaya, MCMC regional offices, and police stations. One more person, a man, will have his statement recorded in the middle of this month.
The cases will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action, the MCMC statement said.
