Supply of fish to plunge further if monsoon persists

Fishmongers appeal to government to assist with imports to supplement local production.
pasar-ikanKUALA LUMPUR: The continuous monsoon season may affect the supply of fish and vegetables, especially with the Chinese New Year next month.
Several fish and vegetable suppliers hope the government will give a helping hand if the weather does not change for the better, with imports to supplement local production.
A fish supplier at the Kuala Lumpur Wholesale Market, identified only as Chong, said the supply of fish was falling as local fishermen, especially in the East Coast could not go out to sea due to bad weather and choppy seas.
His stock of fish was left with only mackerel, pomfret, sea bass, sardine and cob, with stocks falling fast while river fish such as catfish was hard to come by, he told Bernama.
His concern was shared by Selayang market fish monger, Shamsuri Othman, who has to raise prices as the supply of fish dropped further.
