UGLY FACE OF PAS: Harakah's editor-in-chief told to resign

UGLY FACE OF PAS: Harakah's editor-in-chief told to resign
PAS weekly newspaper Harakah has asked its editor-in-chief Ahmad Lutfi Othman, who is on medical leave, to resign.
This is after two of its associate editors had their contracts terminated.
The move was linked to Ahmad Lutfi’s brother Dinsman (Shamsuddin Othman), also a famous writer, who had written articles allegedly criticising the PAS ulama leadership.
According to a source, Ahmad Lutfi (right) was informed of the move last week, and the decision was made during a Harakah board of directors meeting in December.
“For health reasons, he was advised to resign and was offered an invalidity pension, therefore he will be paid half his monthly wage by the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
“However, he did not accept the offer and appealed to continue in his current post,” the source, who declined to be named, told Malaysiakini.
According to the source, the Harakah board of directors chaired by PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali will discuss the matter in a meeting in February.
When asked who will be leading Harakah without the presence of Ahmad Lutfi, the source replied that a decision has yet to be made.
Harakah’s current assistant chief editor is Taufek Yahya.
'Decision based on health reasons'
Meanwhile when contacted, Ahmad Lutfi said he did not know whether the decision to terminate his services had anything to do with the articles said to be criticising the PAS ulama leadership.
He further said he was informed that the decision was made by the board of directors based on “health reasons”.
“It has nothing to do with criticising the ulama. I was only informed that it was due to health reasons.
“I am also surprised, as Harakah did not ask for my medical records, and suddenly I was told to accept the invalidity pension,” he noted.
Ahmad Lutfi did not accept the offer, saying this was because he was still interested to continue giving his services for Harakah as a form of “contribution to the party (PAS)”.
“When such things happen, my morale is low. I hope there is still space for a familial type of discussion,” he added. - M'kini
