Why is Malaysia in top 50 terror list, asks Kit Siang

Govt ticked off for not doing enough against voices of extremism and hatred.
Lim kit siang2DAP elder Lim Kit Siang, questioning why Malaysia was among the top 50 countries ranked on a global terrorism index, has challenged the government and the Cabinet to take swift action against religious extremism and the politics of hatred.
He urged Malaysians to stand up for moderation and for the “politics of inclusion to replace the politics of exclusion”.
He agreed with defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s statement on Friday calling for increased security efforts because Malaysia could be open to terrorism attacks, not discounting attacks similar to the one in Paris against Charlie Hebdo.
But he questioned why Hishammuddin did not look into the reasons why Malaysia was now more open to terrorism, pointing to the many cases of Malaysians rallying to the Islamic State group’s “Caliphate cause” and its use of mass murders and beheadings.
He said Malaysia’s multi-religious and multi-cultural polity would be in jeopardy if the rhetoric and politics of hatred, intolerance and extremism, leading to increased polarisation, continued to be left unchecked.
Kit Siang pointed out that Malaysia had risen 42 places in the Global Terrorism Index 2014 released by the Institute of Economisc and Peace in November, to be ranked 48th, after a rising number of terrorist incidents since 2012. Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan top the list.
Malaysia had overtaken countries where terrorism is a bigger problem, such as Saudi Arabia and France, pointing to the irony of prime minister Najib Razak promoting a global movement of moderates while extremists in the country were blatantly raising the level of hatred, intolerance and bigotry.
“What has gone wrong,” he asked. “Is the Prime Minister and his Cabinet prepared to take the lead in the country to promote moderation and drown out the voices of extremists, who can only represent a tiny though raucous minority in the country?”
Kit Siang, who is MP for Gelang Patah and the DAP’s parliamentary leader, pointed out that the likelihood of terrorism attacks in Malaysia had been less under the first five prime ministers who preceded Najib.
