Zahid - Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Zahid - Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire
A seemingly innocent letter written by the Home Minister to the Amercian FBI has come under intense scrutiny from the Malaysian public, after it was published in the South China Morning Post. The big amount of controversy it stirred in the country, has even overshadowed front page news like the East Coast Floods Disaster, the AirAsia plane crash, the missing Perdana1 plane which consumed RM500K worth of jet fuel on its round the world trip or Rosmah’s global shopping spree.
The curiosity generated nearly killed the cat as the Malaysian public became more and more curious at the controversy it generated. Although the powerful Home ministry seldom comes under heavy criticism because of their ability to wield the Sedition Act big stick, this incident has set of a torrent of criticism with Opposition leaders, NGOs and social media users grilling the Home Minister until his ears turned red.
Everyone seems to be in complete agreement that the incident is too big to be covered up or to be swept silently under the carpet. Until the bungling Home Minister comes clean, the letter to the FBI could prove to be Zahid’s ‘waterloo’. The calls for him to resign in disgrace are getting louder by the day.
While Zahid in his support letter claimed that Paul Phua wasn’t in any way connected to the 14K triad, he also claimed that Phua had assisted Putrajaya on national security projects and was ‘eager’ for him to return to the country.
Links to the Underworld
Zahid Hamidi
Allegations against Zahid have come to a boil with the obvious question of whether Zahid has been bought?! It is an open secret that the Malaysian police or PDRM and those in power have been accused of having connections with the underworld; loan sharks, drug lords, pimps, triads, secret societies and other kingpins.
Tan Sri Musa Hassan was said to have links with shady underworld kingpins Goh Cheng Poh, and BK Tan when he was the inspector-general of police. So, it is not surprising that another Malaysian gambling kingpin Paul Phua is also linked ‘closely’ to the Home Ministry.
Zahid too has been accused of links with local Malay gang Tiga Line, while outside of his Umno party, he is unpopular for his brand of racism-tainted politics and often described as a hypocrite by critics.
The cries for answers have grown louder
Lawyers for Liberty has expressed extreme concern and utter shock at the Home Minister’s extraordinary lengths to protect and clear the name of Paul Phua by vouching for the integrity of the former Macau junket operator and gambling kingpin,
They have also demanded that the Home Minister reveal what sort of national security projects a shady character like Paul Phua could have possibly assisted the government to compel the Minister to write such an extraordinary letter?
It would also mean that the PDRM had given wrong or false information to the FBI concerning Paul Phua which puts the integrity and competency of the PDRM at risk. However, if the content of the letter is not true, Zahid would have prima facie committed a gross abuse of power and possibly various offences under Chapter XI of the Penal Code – “False Evidence and Offences against Public Justice”.
Meanwhile, Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo has called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to shed some light on Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s official letter since the Home Minister has chosen to play deaf, dumb and blind on the matter.
The PM cannot stay silent as he is duty bound to account for his Minister’s action, as it is shameful to find that Malaysia seems to have contradictory positions taken by the police, the Home Ministry and its government over the matter. Gobind also called for the PM to immediately direct a full, open and transparent inquiry into the matter so that all doubts surrounding the matter can be resolved
Former US Ambassador to Malaysia John Mallot has also chipped in to condemn the Home Ministry citing that despite all the news on what Phua has been up to in Macau and the US, Zahid says that Malaysia would welcome Phua back with open arms.
Malott also said that in 2013, Zahid told Malaysians who were unhappy with the country's policies to "leave the country." Senior Malaysian leaders such as Khairy Jamaluddin have told dissidents "good riddance." Yet Zahid says that gambling kingpins who have violated the laws of my country, the US, are to be eagerly welcomed back home to Malaysia.
He also criticized Phua's lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah for implying that the Malaysian Police had made a “very big” mistake and were "wrong" about Phua’s 14K Triad connection even though Zahid never said in his letter that the police were "wrong” or told the FBI why the Malaysian government had declared Phua a triad member in 2008 but now had changed its mind.
Even Perkasa is disgusted
Ibrahim Ali - Founder and president of Malay supremacist group Perkasa
Surprisingly, UMNO sister organization, Perkasa has come forward to grill the Home Minister claiming that it has received barrage of questions from the people, who were concerned that the letter may or may not have elements of graft or abuse of power..
Condemning Zahid’s bizarre diplomatic gesture to bring Phua back to Malaysia, they questioned whether Zahid was beholden to the gambling kingpin for past favours.
"If it is true, then Perkasa believes this is the worst kind of treachery that will ruin the integrity and good name of Malaysia as both corruption and abuse of power is the worst kind of crime. Wow, that is surely a strong worded statement coming from an extremist organization like Perkasa, and one wonders whether they have turned into a new leaf?
The NGO also questioned whether Zahid consulted the Attorney-General before issuing the letter, or is the A-G even aware of it? Did he forward the letter to the Inspector-General of Police before submitting it to the FBI?
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng took a naughty swipe at the home minister’s “atrocious” English that he said even caused him to doubt the authenticity of the letter. He added that the letter’s language is not conforming to international standards of correspondence coming from the Ministry of Home Affairs”.
Meanwhile, the IGP Khalid Abu Bakar has decided to play dumb, refusing to comment on the controversy, “not because he is scared of the Home Minister, but because there was a court case going on”, while ex IGP Musa Hassan denied that he knew the gambling kingpin nor was he aware of the existence of the 14K triad.
Meanwhile, Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah went into damage control mode to claim that Zahid did not vouch for Phua, as his letter was merely a response to Phua's lawyer. Shafee;s remarks also courted flak, with PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli lambasting him for speaking on behalf of the police, after police sources revealed that Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not consult the police before sending a letter to the FBI.
Who is Paul Phua?
Paul Phua
Phua, 50 is a Malaysian national and a well known gambling kingpin wanted in Macau and USA for illegal bookmaking and gambling activities running into the millions. He is considered by the FBI to be one of the key players in what is probably the world's largest online sports gambling agency.
Phua and his son were accused of running an illegal gambling operation from suites at the Caesar's Palace Hotel in Las Vegas during the World Cup in Brazil in July 2014. Phua, who the US authorities also accuse of being a member of the 14K triad society, left Macau on a private jet bound for Las Vegas hours after he was detained.
Phone transcripts appear to show Phua's son Darren, 23, telling a friend via instant messaging that an "under the table" payment of between HK$4 million and HK$5 million would secure his father's release, while Phua's lawyer David Chesnoff dismissed suggestions that he bribed his way out of police custody in Macau. - MAILBAG
