Dr M: We don’t want a police state

The former PM says it wasn't right for the government to abuse the Sedition Act in arresting journalists.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has cautioned the government against turning Malaysia into a virtual police state.
In a recent dialogue with bloggers, he referred to the recent arrest of journalists from The Malaysian Insider under the Sedition Act and said: “I don’t think that is the right way to use power. Of course, he (Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak) will say that it’s not him, it’s the police. But we don’t want to have a police state.”
He noted that “even the magistrate” before whom the arrested journalists were brought had refused to grant the remand order that the police requested.
Mahathir’s remarks were heard in a 40-second video clip uploaded to the “Apanama” blog. It was recorded by pro-Umno blogger Din Turtle, who has been uploading to YouTube short clips from the dialogue session last Friday.
The 90-minute session took place at Mahathir’s Al-Bukhary Foundation office in Kuala Lumpur. The subject of the dialogue was his disagreements with the way Najib is running Umno and the Putrajaya administration.
