Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali has ordered the exco member in charge of sports, Amirudin Shaari, to look into the palace reprimand over the slogan for the Sukma Games.
"I have asked YB Amir to discuss this matter with the sports association," he told reporters in Shah Alam this afternoon.
Azmin said this when asked to comment on the reprimand by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who had said that the “Kita Lawan” slogan gave the impression that Selangor was “mixing politics with sports”.
“Kita Lawan” is the name of the movement campaigning to free opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently serving a five-year jail sentence for sodomy.
In an immediate reaction yesterday, Amirudin said he was agreeable to changing the slogan.
This was in contrast to his defence of the slogan at the recent state assembly sitting on April 3.
He said then that in 2008, he had personally headed the Selangor contingent under Pakatan Rakyat which used the slogan “Sukan Gemilang, Selangor Terbilang”, adding that it was similar to the federal ruling party's slogan of “Umno Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang”.
He added that the 18th Sukma Games in Sarawak was only going to be held next year and had no direct connection with the current political landscape.
Meanwhile, Azmin said that the state government was still waiting for word from Putrajaya on their request to meet and re-discuss the Selangor water restructuring plan.
"I wrote to the Yang Berhormat minister asking for a meeting," he said.
