All hotels are fully booked and the nearest homestay available is at Endau, Johor, about 40km from Rompin town.

ROMPIN: Rompin, better known as the “Giant Fresh Water Prawn’ town is gearing up for the parliamentary by-election as evident by the influx of out-of-town registered vehicles on the roads.
Several main roads and restaurants in and around Rompin are also congested with supporters from Barisan Nasional and opposition parties enquiring about hotels and homestays before the May 5 by-election.
“All are full, don’t even bother about looking for resorts or hotel rooms, the nearest homestay currently available is at Endau, Johor about 40km from Rompin town,” said Nazirul Ahmad, 41, a local resident here.
He said rental for houses, homestays and hotels in the district had now seen a surge in demand immediately following the death of Rompin Member of Parliament Jamaluddin Jarjis in a helicopter crash in Semenyih on April 4.
Realising the eventuality of a by-election in the constituency, he said some quarters were found to have acted as “brokers” to book hotel rooms enbloc in the town.
He said these brokers then rented them out to others offering much higher prices to earn profits.
“Normally, the original owner merely rents out between RM150 and RM200 per day depending on the facilities provided but now the cheapest available is from RM600 to RM800 per day,” he told Bernama here today.
It is understood that there were houseowners here willing to vacate their own houses in order to rent them out at RM2,800 per day.
The Election Commission (EC) has fixed the Rompin by-election for May 5, early voting on April 30 and nomination day on April 22.
Meanwhile Rompin Beach Resort sales manager Shamsul Kamal Ismail said hotel reservations in the district were full since last week.
“Before the EC’s announcement, we received a lot of telephone calls for room reservations but many did not have a confirmed date.
“As soon as the announcement was made, more telephone calls were received but our hotel staff had to reject them as the rooms were already full,” he said.
He said all the 100 rooms in the hotel were fully booked from April 17 until May 6.
“There are individuals and groups who come to enquire about rooms in the hotel almost daily,” he said.
Golden Beach & Golf Resort Kuala Rompin assistant manager Mohd Azrei Fathourahman said nearly all the 86 units consisting of more than 100 rooms were also fully booked.
“Most of the rooms were reserved enbloc and we still maintain the normal rates without raising the prices except on May 1,” he added.
