'IF INVITED, I WILL GO' - Dr M sounds death knell for Najib, says open to tie-up with Ku Li, Anwar to displace Najib
KUALA LUMPUR - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed ignorance today of proposals for him to work together with his former deputy Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to lead Malaysia.
Dr Mahathir claimed he had no idea of a suggestion for him to work with Anwar and Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to remove current prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“I don’t know. I don’t know about it. (If) I was invited, I will go,” he told reporters here without explaining what he meant by the invitation.
When asked if he will consider working with Anwar, Dr Mahathir merely repeated “I don’t know” before walking away.
Yesterday, former law minister Zaid said Dr Mahathir and Anwar — who is currently serving a five year sentence for sodomising a former aide in 2008 — are the only people who can unite the country.
According to Zaid, the Dr Mahathir-Anwar team-up idea was born of talk that a “mother of all meetings” between the two veteran politicians could be in the works, following a meeting between the former prime minister and Anwar’s right-hand man Azmin Ali that purportedly took place in London last month.
Zaid suggested that the two long-time arch rivals bury the hatchet on various issues — including that of Anwar’s sacking as deputy prime minister nearly two decades ago and his first charge for sodomy during Dr Mahathir's tenure.
Zaid added that the duo could then work with senior Kelantan Umno lawmaker Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and “do wonders” for Malaysia while also ensuring Najib is quickly booted from government, just as Dr Mahathir wants.
Tengku Razaleigh could be the interim prime minister in the three years before the next election, while Anwar could be the next prime minister and come up with a new plan to improve Malaysia, Zaid had said.

In 1998, Dr Mahathir sacked Anwar from his post as deputy prime minister on allegations of corruption and sodomy, sparking the Reformasi movement that drew thousands of protesters to the streets.
Anwar spent six years behind bars before the Federal Court overturned his first sodomy conviction in 2004, but was sent back to prison earlier this year after the apex court agreed with a lower court ruling that he had indeed sodomised former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhary Azlan.
Earlier today, Mahathir was asked whether his advice and disagreement with Najib — both the current prime minister and Umno president — would split up Umno.
“Either you remove a prime minister who has failed and who will lead Umno to losing the next election or you take the chance that if he goes off, you might be able to revive Umno,” Dr Mahathir said in a brief reply. - Malay Mail
