Klang GH’s rat-infested canteen shuts down

It is disappointing this happened in a hospital, says deputy health minister

KLANG: The rat-infested and dirty canteen of Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, the Klang General Hospital, was ordered to shut down for two weeks following an inspection by the hospital’s health department on Friday.
The inspection revealed that “the standard of hygiene in the canteen was below par and posed a health risk to the public”.
A member of the hospital staff commented after the canteen was shut down, “Rats running around the hospital is nothing new.”
This is not the first time the authorities have had to deal with dirty conditions at the hospital.
The health department, according to officials, had twice warned the canteen operator to clean up and in February 2005 the canteen was shut down for two weeks.
Hospital director Dr. Ding Lay Ming issued a terse statement saying, “It is standard procedure to close the canteen when it is dirty.”
Deputy Health Minister Dr. Hilmi Yahaya, however, had more to say.
“It is disappointing this happened in a hospital, especially since it has happened before,” he said in a report carried by The Malay Mail Online.
“The hospital authorities should be more alert about cleanliness and cleaners should be more responsible in ensuring the canteen’s hygiene.”
Klang MCA Youth deputy chief Tan Bok Koon said the authorities should act against the canteen operator.
“How could this happen? People come to the hospital to get better, not to get sick,” said Tan.
Apparently, the hospital has sacked the canteen operator.
