Ong Kian Ming says he finds it “very funny” that Wilfred Yong Chen Leong has two law degrees at Bachelor level from UK and Australia.
PETALING JAYA: An MP from DAP has said he finds it odd that an MCA senator is holding not one, but two law degrees from UK and Australia respectively.
Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming, in questioning the double law degrees of newly appointed Senator Wilfred Yong Chen Leong, asked through a Facebook posting, “Why is there a need for someone to have two law degrees (both at the Bachelor level)?”
“I thought that either degree (Yong listed University of East London and University of Tasmania in his Facebook profile) would be sufficient to practice in Malaysia?” he asked.
He told FMT that he thought it “very funny” for someone to have two law degrees.
“Personally, I do not know anyone around me to have two same degrees,” he said.
Ong, a former lecturer, also claimed that Yong refused to offer an explanation to allegations that he possessed a fake masters degree.
In his Facebook post, Ong uploaded a picture of the article a Chinese newspaper carried on Yong, titled, “I have a double degree, says Senator” as well as a screenshot of Yong’s Facebook profile that detailed his academic background.
Yong’s profile lists both his law degrees including a masters in business administration (MBA) from Preston University, United States.
The Chinese news article quoted Yong as saying he had been practising law in Malaysia since 1997.
“I am in the ‘capable team’ based on my qualifications,” Yong had told the paper, adding that he had practiced law in Australia from 1996 to 1997 before returning to Malaysia.
Yong was sworn in as a Senator on April 13. He is also an MCA Central Committee member and Sabah MCA Chairman.
