The law minister says she in no way meant the Sedition Act was unlawful.
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said her statement on the amendment of the Sedition Act by a local news portal was misinterpreted.
In a press statement issued here yesterday, she said her comment in the article “Law Minister: Amending Sedition Act now disrespects Federal Court, but not lawful” carried in a local news portal, had been taken out of context.
Nancy said she was asked to respond to the statement by DAP Member of Parliament for Puchong, Gobind Singh Deo that it was disrespectful to debate the amendment to the Sedition Act in Parliament as there was an on-going court case challenging the constitutionality of the Act.
In reaction, Nancy said: ”the statement made by Gobind Singh was his own opinion, but it does not mean that the amendment is unlawful”. She also said that it did not mean that she agreed with Gobind’s statement.
