Selangor agreed to give land to Putrajaya for the development of the 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA) scheme only if the federal government met the state's conditions, Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said.
He said Selangor had never rejected the housing scheme as alleged by certain quarters but had certain reservations about it.
He said the PR1MA board had gone off-track from its aim of building affordable homes for the people.
"Give us evidence that we rejected PR1MA.
"The issue is PR1MA was developing homes that were too costly for the people, RM400,000 is not affordable," he said at a press conference in Kampung Jawa, Klang, today.
He was responding to allegations that the state had in the past not given land to Putrajaya to build homes under the PR1MA scheme in Selangor.
Last December, Azmin had said that Selangor was planning to build affordable homes priced between RM100,000 and RM220,000 for the people and called the federal government's PR1MA project a failure.
He said that until now, not even one home under PR1MA had materialised, prices were pegged beyond RM400,000 per unit and the project was good for show only.
Former Selangor opposition leader Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias then said Azmin should stop politicising the issue and instead prepare for PR1MA homes to be built in the state, instead of questioning the federal government.
Samsudin said Azmin needed to show commitment in the matter given that administrative and land premium issues came under the jurisdiction of the state, while development conditions were under the local authority.
Azmin today said the federal government could not ask Selangor for its land and then proceed with polices that went against the state government's position on affordable housing.
"The state government defines affordable homes as not costing more than RM250,000. If PR1MA wants to work with the state government, they must abide by our policies.
"We cannot allow affordable homes priced at RM400,000 because this will only burden the people, on top of the rising cost of living and goods as a result of the goods and services tax (GST).
"We are responsible for providing housing, but it must be affordable for the public," Azmin, who also the Gombak MP, said.
He said the state government was willing to engage PR1MA as long as the federal government body followed guidelines and rules on housing.
