Telcos agree to lower charges

Minister Shabery Cheek to meet four bosses again to finalise details.
Ahmad-Shabery-Cheek_phone_600KUALA LUMPUR: Despite the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) earlier this week some 20 million odd Internet users can expect to pay lower charges this month.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said broadband rates must be more affordable to encourage more Internet use.
“In a free market, a low charge must be offered because we want more consumers,” Shabery said after meeting with the chiefs of the telecommunications companies recently.
Shabery, who will meet them again next week, said the telcos have agreed in principle to reduce the tariff.
“They will be announcing the (new) rates this month. There will be more than a 6% reduction,” he said at a #TanyaGomen session with the public yesterday, The Star Online reported.
Shabery’s meeting with the telcos for lower charges is part of the government’s ongoing effort to bridge the digital divide.
Industry sources said there must be at least a 10% reduction to offset the GST and make a difference.
The chief executives of four telecommunications companies in separate statements said they supported Shabery’s call.
They were Telekom Malaysia’s Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa Zam, DiGi.com’s Albern Murty, Celcom Axiata’s Shazalli Ramly and Morten Lundal of Maxis.
