THEY WERE VIOLENT: Reporter almost bashed by anti-church protesters 'led' by IGP's brother
PETALING JAYA - A reporter for The Star yesterday came close to being attacked by a group protesting outside the Taman Medan church, but he was saved by a colleague from Sinar Harian.
Nicholas Cheng reported the incident in a Facebook posting. He said the Sinar Harian reporter, whom he identified only as Jannah, offered to stay by his side to prevent him from being attacked.
“Hey, I think you should stay with me; don’t walk off by yourself,” he quoted her as saying. They conducted their interviews together after that, he added.
Cheng said the protestors were angry because he had asked them the following questions: “Who gives you the right to claim this land as Muslim land? How will a cross turn your sons into Christians? What authority do you have to tell someone else to not have a church here?”
He said they became confrontational, grabbing him by the shirt and speaking in threatening words.
Cheng said he was touched by Jannah’s kindness, adding that it was because of people like her that Malaysia remained a beautiful place.
On Sunday, church authorities took down a cross constructed on the roof of the new church after about 50 people angrily protested against it .
The protesters claimed that the sight of the cross in a predominantly Muslim area was an affront them.
The alleged leader of the protest is a brother of the Inspector General Police, Khalid Abu Bakar. - FMT
