Umno Supreme Council to the rescue?

Cheras Umno chief asks the party's top guns to mediate between Mahathir and Najib.

PETALING JAYA: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has proposed that the entire Umno Supreme Council act as mediator in the dispute between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and elder statesman Mahathir Mohamad.
In a press statement posted on the Cheras Umno website today, Syed Ali suggested a three-step approach in the mediation: first, the Supreme Council should meet with Najib; and then they should approach Mahathir; and then Najib, accompanied by the Umno Deputy President and all its vice-presidents, should meet Mahathir face to face.
He did not offer suggestions as to what they should discuss at the meetings, saying only that they must find ways to end the quarrel and ensure that there is peace between Najib and Mahathir.
“The members of the Supreme Council must control the situation and ensure that Tun Dr Mahathir’s critical remarks do not lead to division in the party and in the public at large,” he said.
“The Supreme Councillors cannot remain silent for it will be detrimental to the party.”
Umno under its previous presidents had experienced many crises before and had always found solutions to them, he said. “In the same way, there must be a good way of handling the crisis brought on by Dr Mahathir’s criticism of Dato Seri Najib.”
He said that while he held Mahathir in his highest regard, he also believed that Najib had in his heart only the best interests of the Malays as well as citizens of other races.
“Anyone who listened to Dato’ Seri Najib’s speech at the Umno General Assembly would have heard his sincere proclamation to defend Islam, the Malays and the rest of the people of this country,” he said.
“I see Dato’ Seri Najib as sincere in everything he does. I believe he is far-seeing in ensuring that the well-being of the Malays is taken care of to posterity.”
Syed Ali called on “all quarters” to stop the polemics with Mahathir to ensure Barisan Nasional’s victory in the Rompin and Permatang Pauh by-elections.
He also expressed disappointment over “rude comments” directed at Najib and Mahathir that have become common in social media since the latest escalation of the dispute between the two.
